Sin & Tonic Review in The Herald Sun
1st November 2011
Sin & Tonic receives a great review in The Herald Sun on the 1st of November from Kate Herbert:
DRACULA'S is celebrating its 30th birthday. Despite sexy movie vampires being in vogue, its new show - Sin and Tonic - is a flashback to vaudeville, burlesque and 1980s theatre restaurants.
We are greeted by bloodstained, fanged waiters, then herded into a ghost train for a scary ride to the theatre, where the decor is grim beauty, kitsch and horror-movie paraphernalia. The dinner service diversions are a cheesy assortment of songs and comedy, but Sin and Tonic, the main entertainment, is a throbbing cocktail of hard rock, grotesque comedy and burlesque - particularly in the more cohesive second half.
Created by Marc Newman, it boasts a versatile cast, slick music (Darren Hulcombe, Josh Celata) and startling digital projections (Paul Newman). Gillian Perry makes sin-uendo stand-up comedy charming and hilarious then, with Philippa Harrison, provides sassy burlesque.
Ash Flanders and Chris Buchanan do a fine Michael Jackson medley and a hilarious sketch.
The show hurtles to a rowdy finale with Whitesnake's Here I Go Again, the Rolling Stones' Sympathy For The Devil and a Lady Gaga number. If you like flashy, noisy and kitsch, sink your fangs into this.
